In 1860, Daniel Potter was 13, and lived with his parents Freeborn and Louisa (Williams) Potter on the family farm in Cranston, Rhode Island. Freeborn Potter served on the town council of Cranston for many years. Daniel Potter graduated from Amherst College in the early 1870s, and married Ellen Parker in 1873. In 1880, he lived in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, and was still there in 1920. He worked as a landscape architect.

There is no indication that Daniel Potter served in the Civil War.
